According to WHO, Adolescence covers the period of life between 10 and 20 years of age. According to American Heritage Medical Dictionary, the period of physical and psychological development from the onset of puberty to complete growth or maturity is adolescence.
Etymology, adolescence, to grow up:
i) The period is developed between the onset of puberty and childhood. It usually begins between 11 and 13 years of age with appearance of secondary sex characteristics and spans over teen age years terminating at 1 8 to 20 years of age with the completion of the development of adult form. During this period, an individual undergoes extensive physical psychological, emotional and personality changes.
ii) The stage or quality of being adolescent of youthful. Adolescence is often divided into three distinct phases, such as early, mid and late.
Common Problems: Generally speaking most young people are able to negotiate the biological, cognitive, emotional and social transitions of adolescence successfully. Some adolescents, however, are at risk of developing certain problems, such as:
* Eating disorders, such as, Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia or Obesity. About 40% of 15-19 years aged children suffer from the disorder.
* Drug or alcohol use.
* Menstrual disorder (such as, Amenorrhea, Dysmenorrhea and Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding)

ii) Interpersonal Isolation - from friends and family.
iii) Cognitive dysfunction e.g. decline in academic performance, irregularities in expressive or receptive language.
iv) Psychiatric disorder e.g. early adolescence can show mood disorders, such as, clinical depressions, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders and suicide. Late adolescence and early adulthood are peak years for the onset of schizophrenia.
v) Delayed or precocious puberty.
Etiology of adolescence crisis:
During the transitional stage development between childhood and adulthood a child develops secondary sex characteristics as his or her hormonal balance shifts strongly towards adult stage. This is triggered by the Pituitary Gland which secrets and surge of hormones, such as testosterones (boys) or estrogen (girls) in the blood stream and begins the rapid maturation of the gonad the girls ovaries & the boys testicles. Endocrine disorders have been responsible for emotional disturbance and other functional disturbances.
Homeopathy considers adolescence crisis is a form of acute disease, which states that it is the sudden explosion of Psora. So, Psora is the root of this crisis. Functional disturbances which cause tendency to suicide or destruction lead to syphilitic miasm. Gaining excess weight leads to sycotic miasm.
Allopath uses tranquilizer to induce sleep and to reduce the violent behavior of the patient. Also, vitamins to be prescribed.
Treatment should be done according to the instructions given by Hahnemann in the Organon. Aphorism no 224 - 227 & other cases it should be treated on the totality of symptoms.
At the beginning of my homeopathic practice, I had treated an adolescent patient who was my neighbor. She was well known to me since her childhood. The patient was a girl about 18 years old, a student of HSC level. Her temperament was mild, sober, reserved and quiet. However, one morning I was called on to see her because suddenly she became violent and lost her temper and had been talking continuously in delirious state from midnight.
The patient told me that her college teacher wanted to marry her. She looked very restless. Her parents were very much worried. Most of the people believe that this kind of patient is attacked by supernatural creature known as Jeen. Fortunately her father was an educated person. He consulted with a psychiatric Dr. Sobhan of PG hospital about her daughter. He prescribed her tranquilizer to bring the patient into sleep to lessen her sufferings.
After two days I visited her. Surprisingly I found her restless and talking obscene matter. In front of me she spit on her father's face and tried to strangle her father's throat with her fingers. I selected four rubrics from Kent's Repertory : Delusions, loquacity with; Spitting faces of people; Obscene talk; Delirium, violent deeds.
I took eliminative symptom, Delusions, Loquacity with, where seven remedies can be found: namely Belladona, Hyoscyamus, Lachesis, Opium, Rhustox, Stramonium, Verattram album. I observed that Belladona represent all the symptoms in highest grade & the highest similimum of the patient symptoms.
It was observed that Belladonna represents all the symptoms wish highest grade and marks. So I applied Belladonna 30 a dose to her tongue. After a few seconds she gained her normal state and told me that homeopathic medicine is so wonderful, because it worked instantly. I first proved the reaction of Belladonna which Kent described the four medicines Bell, Cup, Nux-v, Zinc works instantly before eyelid finish its twitching.
This improvement continued for short time. As Hahnemann said in Organon this type of violent mental disorder of any patient requires short acting medicine like Acon, Bell, Stram, Hyos, Verat. Again her symptoms relapsed but with less violence. Two days after her father informed me that she involuntarily urinated in the bed.
Involuntary bed wetting was the latest symptoms or concomitant symptoms for which Hering said "Latest developed symptoms are the highest value in prescribing with the original symptoms of delirium or delusion. Her original symptoms in the beginning a delusion state that she was obsessed by the idea of marriage, usually girls sexually excited indicate one remedy in repertory - Causticum.
So a co-ordination between first and latest developed symptoms corresponds beautifully which indicates patient as a whole. Causticum is a deep acting remedy. I applied Causticum 30 one dose.
Finally the patient cured completely. At present, she is married with two children. Since about 26 years she has no other psychiatric problem.
In the conclusions, it can be said that homeopathic medicines play a definite role in modifying the behavioral dysfunctions like substance abuse, self-destructive behavior, cognitive dysfunctions, crime, drug-addiction, lack of appetite, obesity and psychiatric disorders.
The above case study confirms the efficacy of homeopathic treatment in psychiatric disorder.
