40 villagers held in Jashore over attack on DB police

JASHORE, Nov 10: Police arrested around 40 people from Matikumra village in Jhikargachha upazila on Friday in connection with the attack on four detectives during their drive to arrest a listed drug trader.
The villagers attacked four DB police constables, Murad Hossain, Shimul Hossain, Mamun Hossain and driver of their vehicle Shaon and gave them a good thrashing suspecting them fake DB members when they went there to arrest a listed drug trader, said Mainul Haque, superintendent of Jashore Police. The DB policemen were injured in the attack. Among the injured, the condition of two policemen was critical, said the SP. Later, they were rescued by other policemen.
In connection with the attack, police in a drive arrested at least 40 people, including local UP member Faruk Hossain and his niece Asadul Islam.
Most male residents of the village fled the area to avoid mass arrest, claimed the villagers. They claimed that at least 80 people were arrested.    -UNB
