Anti-plastic campaign at DU
A non-government organization-'AGROHO' organized an anti- plastic campaign on the Dhaka University (DU) campus to create awareness about hazardous impact of single use of plastic bags and different types of plastics on Saturday.
With the slogan Dhaka is our home, keep our home clean' the campaign started at10am from Raju Memorial Sculpture and ends at TSC at 2pm. Teachers of Department of Development Studies, students of different departments of DU, AGROHO members and Tokai, participated At the programme.
The participants of the campaign removed various types of discarded plastic materials and polythene bags from the DU including the Fine Arts, Suhrawardy Udyan, DU Library, Art Building, Shaheed Minar and Curzon Hall.
AGROHO Chairperson Dalia Rahman, 'We, the Dhaka city dwellers, thrown 14 million polythene bags every day in Dhaka city, a bulk of this waste gets trapped in the sewers, pipes and drains as caused the sewerage systems to break down repeatedly, creating water logging during the rain, there are also plastic bottles and other plastic goods.
She also said that this is the high time for resisting plastic pollution now and it should be started from the grassroots level.
She also explained the future plan of AGROHO for recycling of PET bottles as well as recycling of all types of abandoned plastic materials, including polythene bags. She seeks help from the government and donor agencies to spread this initiative of AGROHO throughout the country.
Prof Abu Eusuf, Department of Development Studies, DU, said by appreciating the noble initiative that will contribute toward sensitizing citizens on the adverse effect of using plastic.
"Only raising awareness among people on the usage of plastic, especially polythene bags, can save the country from the devastating threat of environment pollution", he added.
Prof Dr Tiabur Rahman, Department of Development Studies, DU, said that we need to do collaborative effort to fight against plastic pollution.
