Low quality diet served at Cox’s Bazar hospital
COX'S BAZAR, Sept 14: Allegations of serving low quality diet to the patients of Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital were found.
For breakfast, one banana, two boiled eggs and substantial amount of bread are to be served to each patient, but the patient is getting one low quality banana and bread. For lunch, a patient is supposed to get 250 grams of rice, 214 grams of chicken, 150 grams of potato, 100 grams of sweet pumpkin and 200 grams of papaya. Besides, different items of total Taka 125 are allocated for the patient.
But, the patients alleged that they are being served low quality rice. Only 4 kg of lentil soup is provided to 300 patients in lunch and supper time.
As per further allegations, the catering company Asad Enterprise is supplying one banana and bread to each patient for breakfast since last four months, but each patient is supposed to get two boiled eggs with it. Special patients are to get milk, green coconut and two boiled eggs, but they are not getting the items.
While investigating, it was found that a patient is to get chicken and two eggs in four days and rui fish for one day a week, but the company supplies chicken for two days and eggs for the remaining days.
The patients alleged that the company is embezzling money from the food meant for them.
A cook of the hospital's kitchen said, "Aman Ullah, younger brother of the contractor Asad Ullah, buys the items for the patients daily. We only cook the items which he brings. We cook four kilograms of lentil daily and serve it to the patients during lunch and supper time. Besides, chicken or eggs are given at that time. In breakfast, one banana and five loafs of bread except eggs are given."
Abdu Shukkur, 70, a patient admitted to No. 30 seat on the ground floor of the hospital said, "I have been admitted here 11 days back. During breakfast, we get one banana and bread. But, the banana's quality is very bad. In lunch and supper time, we get eggs or chicken while lentil is given regularly. But, the quality of rice is very low."
Seeking anonymity, a hospital official said, actually the quality of diet at the hospital is very bad. No rule is followed in this connection. The contractor supplies the diets as per his wish.
While asked, contractor Asad Ullah said, "The diet list given by the hospital authority is wrong. I'm supplying better diets."
When asked, Assistant Director of the hospital Dr Soltan Ahmad Siraji said, "The diet list fixed by us is accurate. I can't tell why listed diets are not being given. Super of the hospital Dr Pu Cha Nu can give the right answer."
In this connection, Dr Pu Cha Nu said, "We asked the contractor to supply the listed diets. If the contractor doesn't supply the required diets, we will not clear his bill."
Vice-President of Sadar Hospital Patients' Welfare Association and Cox's Bazar Municipality Mayor Mujibur Rahman said, "We will not tolerate irregularities in supplying the patients' diets. We will take steps in this connection soon."
