Kisuke Urahara: The veiled hero
The ending of Bleach's manga was a mourning day for most of the shonen anime fans although it had a quite successful conclusion. Isn't it obvious? They pulled off a perfectly balanced show for 14 years boosting all the characters with the right amount of development, which apparently is not done by most anime nowadays.
In anime, most of the times, some important characters are left behind. When I thought about it, the first person who popped up in my mind was Kisuke Urahara; the mad scientist with hidden contribution. Apparently, the whole story of Bleach took place because of a major creation made by this minor character.
Bleach starts off with Ichigo Kurosaki; the protagonist gaining powers of a Soul Reaper from a new Soul Reaper named Rukia Kuchiki. Ichigo with his acuity catches everything swiftly and achieves the power of an average Soul Reaper.
However, the protagonist of the show loses all his powers at a point. When there was no hope, Urahara stood by him and assisted him to gain his powers back. Without the help of this generous character, Bleach would have been a waste. After knowing about Ichigo's hidden powers, Urahara had given all he had to uplift his powers and take them to the highest level a Shinigami/Soul Reaper can achieve.
The best trait about Urahara is his ability to have no ego at all even after being one of the strongest characters of the anime. He won the fans' heart every time he deliberately looked naive and foolish in front of everybody just to save and not hurt another person's esteem.
The other quality of Uraharais is his magnificent intellect which surpasses everybody; even the biggest antagonist of the show had once mentioned that only Urahara's intellect surpasses his own. Sosuke Aizen, the antagonist also mentioned once that Kisuke was his archenemy and the only one who could compete him.
His greatest invention
The greatest invention of Urahara, which assisted to save many human beings and Soul Reapers, turned out to be his greatest fault. The greatest inventions sometimes become the greatest threats for us and that is what happened. Hogyoku was the powerful stone that would separate the hollows (vicious monsters) from humans and soul reapers. Urahara built the Hogyoku for a great will and was admired by most of the Soul Reapers at a time but because of the traitor Sosuke Aizen, everything fell apart.
The disloyal traitor had opened the barrier of hollows and Soul Reapers to reign over the hollows and gain their power and finally attack the king of the city of Soul Reapers, also known as the Soul King.
His own season
As Urahara had captured the hearts of a huge bunch of Bleach fans, Tite Kubo (the creator of Bleach) launched a whole season where Urahara was the main protagonist. It was the 11th season of Bleach when most of the fans were dying for a season! That was my favourite season without any doubt. It packed up Urahara's tragic past when he was in the Soul Society (the city of the Soul Reapers) and was a captain (highest rank of a Soul Reaper).
The season also had a few funny conversations between Urahara and Shinji Hirako (another prestigious captain). Shinji pretty soon realised that Urahara was a kind soul who would do anything for Soul Society which gained Urahara the respect of Shinji and even many other captains.
It portrayed the moments when Urahara did everything he could do to save Soul Society from the evil. Sadly, he couldn't figure out that the evilest person was no one but Sosuke Aizen. There was a time skip of a few years in the season and after that, they slowly moved to the ending, where Sosuke Aizen deceived Urahara and many other Soul Reapers and get them banished from the Soul Society.
After being banished from the Soul Society, Urahara saved many Soul Reapers' lives including Shinji Hirako's. Later he opened up a candy store where he also sold different kinds of Soul Reaper's materials to fight.
The only reason the Soul Reapers could defeat Sosuke Aizen's powerful army was Urahara's intellect. It was his idea to bring them to a destination to fight where no one could harm the real world; he opened up another dimension using his talent of Science to prevent ruinous attempts from the real world.
When all the Soul Reapers barring Ichigo and Isshin Kurosaki (Ichigo's father) lost to Sosuke Aizen in the end, Urahara showed up and almost killed Aizen. Other than a contribution to this fight, Urahara helped many Soul Reapers to gain their power back including Ichigo's father.
Kisuke Urahara is a character who proved that the statement "All heroes don't wear capes" is true. There are many other veiled heroes too, like Piccolo from Dragon Ball, Kakashi from Naruto, Shanks from One Piece and many others.
