Jail Khal re-digging starts in Barishal
BARISHAL, Sept 11: The re-digging of Jail Khal (canal) started at Nathullabad area of the city on Saturday morning.
The work was first started on September 3, 2016. The main objective of the re-digging is to free the canal from grabbers and maintain its navigability. Barishal Divisional Commissioner Ram Chandra Das inaugurated the drive as chief guest.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Barishal Md. Habibur Rahman presided over the programme. The drive will continue till its total cleaning.
DC Md. Habibur Rahman said about 500 local people took part in the cleaning of the three-kilometre long canal.
He said not only the Jail Khal but all the 23 canals in the city will be recovered to ensure smooth plying of vessels. A proposal in this connection is already under consideration at Executive Committee of National Economic Council. It may be mentioned that district administration ended first phase of erecting boundary pillars on the bank of the canal to prevent grabbing. The work started two years ago at Kirtonkhola River point and ended at Nathullabad point. District administration sources said more than 100 illegal structures including five multi-storied buildings and about hundred shops constructed on both sides of the canal were demolished during the drive.
