Padma raises alarm in Rajshahi

RAJSHSHI, September, 11: Though Rajshahi region is not experiencing heavy rainfall this year, water level of River Padma now on the rise due to overflow of upstream waters from India. With the recession of water level, erosion by the mighty river Padma has started at different points in Rajshahi district causing many people to be homeless and helpless.  Particularly people of Rajshahi chars area became tensed as the river flooding the chars.
Almost all the char areas in Rajshahi have been flooded as the water level in the Padma River continued to rise for the last few days, causing sufferings to hundreds of people there.
The Padma was flowing only 90 centimetres below the danger level in Rajshahi city on Monday evening. The danger level has been marked at 18.55 metres as per the level of the city plain.
The water level was recorded at 17.65 metres on Monday evening and it rose to 18.4 metres 24 hours later, according to Hydrological Department of Water Development Board (WDB) in the district.
Many chars, including Char Khanpur, Khidirpur, Majh Char in Paba upazila; Char Atarpur, Laxmipur, Narayanpur in Bagha upazila; and Char Alatuli and Ashariadaha in Godagari upazilas of Rajshahi have been flooded, according to WDB and district administration.
Many houses in Kajla and Talaimari areas near Rajshahi city were also inundated.
There was waist-deep water in the Majh Char and knee-deep water at Char Khidirpur.
Distribution of relief material has started in the initiative of the district administration to the flood victims. On Monday, the relief was distributed by the district administration to the people of Char Khidirpur and Middle char. Paba Upazila Nirbahi Officer Zahid Newaz distributed Tk 2,000 in cash and 30 kg rice to each of the 50 families.
Godagari Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shimul Aktar said that the chairman of Char Asaridah union informed about floods. The chairman is asked to make a list of the sufferers and they will be provided relief for them.
On the other hand, due to increase in the padma water day by day, there are many thousands of homes including several educational institutions facing the danger of Charghat upazila. The houses with these institutions can be flooded anytime.
Yusufpur UP chairman of the upazila, Alhaj Shafiul Alam Ratan said most of the union has long been dissolved in the erosion of the Padma. He said thousands of homes, including a mosque in Sahapur area and Tangan Government Primary School are now threatened due to unusual increase of water level for the last few days.
