Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions judge's Court on Tuesday rejected the bail prayer of noted photographer Shahidul Alam in a case filed under the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act. Judge KM Imrul Kayes passed the order after hearing the bail petition filed on August 14. The High Court on Monday directed the lower court to dispose of the bail issue of Shahidul in the case by Tuesday. Public Prosecutor Mohammad Abdullah Abu and Additional Public Prosecutor Taposh  Kumal Paul objected  the bail prayer while Barrister Sara Hossain and Barrister Jotirmoy Barua moved the bail prayer for Shahidul Alam.

Drik Gallery founder Shahidul is now in Dhaka Central Jail in the case. He was charged with  spreading propaganda and false information against the government. He was picked up by plainclothes men from his residence in the capital's Dhanmondi on August 5. Police filed the case against him and produced him before a Dhaka court the following day. He was then placed on a seven-day remand.

On completion of his seven-day remand, Shahidul was denied bail and sent to jail by a Dhaka court on August 13. On September 4, a judge of another HC bench felt "embarrassed" to hear Shahidul's bail petition in the case. The same day, the bench forwarded the petition to the chief justice for a decision, saying one of the bench members felt "embarrassed" to hear the matter.

Nobel laureate Amartya Sen along with 11 other Nobel Prize winners has called for immediate release of Shahidul Alam. Alam, who is also the founder of Pathshala and South Asian Media Institute, is also involved in the human rights movement. He criticising the government's handling of street protests for safe roads in the capital's Jigatala area on the Facebook. He also criticised the government, led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in an interview with Al Jazeera.
