Default loan in 6 months stands at Tk 15,037cr

The amount of default loan has increased by Tk 15,037 crore over the last six months (January to June), according to Bangladesh Bank (BB) sources. At the end of December, 2017, the default loan amount was Tk 74, 303 crore. By June of the year 2018, it stood at Tk 89,340 crore. By the same time, the written- off loan was Tk 55,311 crore against the total default loan of Tk 1,44,651 crore. The schedule banks have disbursed a total of Tk 85, 8521 crore loan until the end of June. This loan was Tk79, 8195 crore last December meaning that the banks disbursed Tk 60,326 crore in six months (from January to June). The six public banks have default loans amounting to Tk 42852 crore. Of which Tk 11,513 crore is with 20 top defaulters.

Of the four banks, the default loan in Sonali Bank is Tk 13,770 crore while Agrani Bank has Tk 5,115 crore, Janata Bank Tk 5,818 crore and Rupali Bank Tk 4,250 crore. Default loan of the nine foreign     banks now stands at Tk 2,271 crore. By this time six public banks' loan disbursement till March has reached Tk 151759 crore.
Mohammad Shams-Ul Islam, Managing Director of Agrani Bank, told the Daily Observer that they are taking all precautions before disbursing new loans as some of the matured loans got defaulted. "We are trying to recover the default loans," he said and added that they had succeeded in recovering some default loans. If we can utilise the clients properly, we shall be able to recover all the default loans, he went on to say.

Khondoker Ibrahim Khaled, former Deputy Governor of Bangladesh Bank, told this correspondent the proper action of the government could recover the default loans, otherwise, the default loans could not be recovered as the defaulters are more powerful in the society.
