Tk 10 per kg rice sale for the ultra-poor in Kishoreganj
KISHOREGANJ, Sept 9: The sale of rice at Taka 10 per kg among ultra-poor people has started in the district on Tuesday.
The rice will be distributed among 59,652 ultra-poor families in 108 unions under 13 upazilas of the district.
Under the food-friendly programme, selected card holders will get 30 kg rice every month through village ration dealers. In this connection, the government has allocated 5368.680 metric tonnes of rice to 211 dealers.
The ultra-poor families have been selected through the local public representatives. They will get 30 kg rice in each of three lean months- September, October and November of the year.
Out of the families, 6,325 are in Sadar Upazila, 5,114 in Bhairab, 4,155 in Bajitpur, 3,062 in Kuliarchar, 4,778 in Pakundia, 5,334 in Karimganj, 3,275 in Hossainpur, 5,796 in Katiadi, 4,001 in Tarail, 2,855 in Nikli, 4,784 in Austagram, 5,660 in Itna and 4,513 in Mitamoin upazilas.
On Tuesday morning, the rice sale activity was lunched through the selected dealers like other parts of the country.
District Controller of Food Mohammad Mamunur Rashid said, "We believe the government, through the local public representatives and administrations, will ensure transparency through the people oriented welfare programmes."
He also said poor families led by women, particularly widows, divorced or abandoned and children will be given priority, according to the guideline.
In reply to a query, he said, besides rice, flour is also being sold to the poor at Tk 18 per kg under the Open Market Sale programme by the Sadar Upazila Food Department.
