The ruling Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Friday termed Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukder's walkout of a meeting of the Election Commission (EC)
opposing the use of EVM (Electronic Voting Machine) in the upcoming parliamentary polls beauty of democracy.
"The Election Commission is comprised of five members and it is natural for one of them to give a note of dissent. This is the beauty of democracy," he told a press conference at Sylhet Circuit House.
Quader, however, does not see any complication in the commission over the stance of Mahbub Talukder.
"The Election Commission also runs itself democratically. Any of the EC members has the right to dissent. Why would we call it a complication? The other four commissioners also have the right to express their opinions just like the one who already objected."
The Election Commission in a meeting on Thursday decided to bring amendment to the Representation of People Order (RPO) to pave the way for using EVMs in the electoral process. However, it is the parliament which will take the final decision on whether the provision of EVM will be included in the RPO and EVM will be used in the upcoming parliamentary polls, said Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda.
Quader said the BNP opposed the use of EVM as they could not made allegation of vote rigging.
"There is no scope for rigging election through EVMs. The use of EVMs will create positive perception about the election in the country," Quader said.
