OMS rice sale at Tk 10 per kg to start soon
The food friendly programme of the government - open market sale (OMS) of rice at Tk 10 per kg - for the poor people of the country is likely to start in September this year. It would be the last phase of food friendly OMS programme for this year and the present government. The programme was taken to keep local food grain market stable for the country's people. Under the programme, a total of 50 lakh families altogether will get benefit. Each of the families will get 30 kgs of rice per month at Tk 10 per kg, according to the Food Ministry. According to Ministry officials, the programme will continue till November this year. The three months - September to November - is considered as a lean period for the country's poor people as the poor people pass hard time in the three months without getting work.
The government provides food support to the country's poor and ultra-poor people for five months in two phases under the food friendly OMS programme. In first phase, it sales rice at Tk 10 per kg from March to April while it is given from September to November in second phase.
When contacted, Food Minister Qamrul Islam told this correspondent that the Directorate General of Food (DG Food) has already completed its preparation to start the programme in September this year. It will continue till November, so that the people don't need to suffer for food grain ahead of the upcoming national election.
He said to manage the programme smoothly, the government will need 4.5 lakh metric tonnes of rice in three months. At present, government has a stock of around 13.5 lakh metric tonnes of food grain in the warehouses. Internal procurement of food grain is still on. Around 5 lakh tonnes of food grain can be collected more from local production this year.
It will ensure adequate stock of food grain at the end of the year. At the same time, the farmers will also get the price of the rice in the local market, he added. He also informed that the government is also planning to start the open market sale (OMS) soon to keep price of commodities and food grain market stable in the country.
