BCL activists beat up DU student

Some activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League’s Salimullah Muslim Hall unit of Dhaka University (DU) on Tuesday night beat up a second-year student of Disaster Management and Science department.

The victim, Ehsan Rafiq, was also allegedly confined to BCL hall unit president’s room for more than eight hours so that the incident could not come to light.

Ehsan said, “Omar of Marketing department borrowed my calculator around three months ago. On Thursday night when I asked him to return my calculator, he refused and threatened me of dire consequences.”

He also alleged the hall unit Vice President Tanim, Joint General Secretary Anim Irtiza Shovon and Abu Taher later called him to the TV room and snatched his mobile phone terming him as a “Shibir” activist.

Although the BCL men did not find any content related to Shibir in his Facebook account, the BCL men beat him.

Hall unit BCL President Tahsan Ahmed Russell then called Ehsan to the hall ground and hinted his follower to assault Ehsan, he alleged.

Being instructed, the BCL activists including assistant secretary Omar Faruk, Ruhul Amin, Samiul Islam Sami, Ahsan Ullah, deputy secretary Mehedi Hasan Himel again beat up Ehsan with iron rods and sticks, which left him unconscious.

The attackers then took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment and told the duty doctors that he had an accident.

After taking primary treatment there, when Ehsan returned to dorm at 4:30 am, Tahsan and his followers confined him to the room no 16 for eight hours and threatened not to share the incident with anyone.

Ehsan fled the hall Wednesday afternoon and went to his father.

Contacted, Tahsan admitted the incident of beating Ehsan and said he drove away the BCL activists from hall who were involved in the assault.

He also said, BCL recommended the hall authority to take steps against them and organizational steps will also be taken against the attackers.
