Teachers and employees of non-MPO educational institutions, who have been demonstrating for the last five days for enlistment under the government's Monthly Payment Order (MPO) facilities, began hunger strike on Sunday.
Around 250 teachers of 5,242 government educational institutions started fast unto death in front of National Press Club in the morning, said Lukman Hossain, teacher of Chithalia Dakhil Madrasa of Kushtia who participated in the movement.
They demand inclusion of all government approved secondary schools, colleges, madrasas and vocational institutions under the MPO facilities. Since Tuesday, the teachers under the banner of Non-MPO Shikhya Pratishthan Shikhyak Karmachari Federation started their sit-in programme at the same place in the capital to realise their demand. On Saturday, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid urged teachers to end their agitation and return home. The Minister also said a committee led by the State Minister of Finance has been formed to resolve the issue. Later, the teacher vowed to continue with their demonstration rejecting the Education Minister's call to end their agitation.
Lukman told the Daily Observer on Sunday, "The government had been making promises since long. We want a specific announcement from the government in this regard".
