Thrust on ensuring faster socio-economic development in backward char areas

GAIBANDHA, Dec 24: Speakers at a roundtable meeting here on Saturday underscored the need for ensuring faster socio-economic development of backward char areas of the district through providing the dwellers with all types of existing facilities of the state.
"Emphasis should be given to change their living standard like the people of the mainland to lead the country towards sustainable development", they said.
They came up with the comments while addressing the meeting with local  journalists organised by Friendship, a national NGO, at its training centre at Madnerpara under Fulchhari Upazila in the district on Saturday afternoon.
The programme was arranged under Good Governance Project funded by ERIKS Development Partner and Friendship Luxemburg on how to accelerate the development activities for the char people here taking suggestions from the media men.
Moderated by Journalist Sarker M. Shahiduzzaman, the function was also addressed, among others, by journalists Harun-or-Rashid Badal, Quazi Ziaul Hafiz, Uzzal Chakrabarty, Iddrish Uz-Zaman Mona, SM Biplob and Kaiser Ahmed Plabon.
Earlier, the overall activities of Friendship were presented by the team leader of the project Ahmed Toufiqur Rahman elaborately through multimedia projector.
In his presentation, Toufiqur Rahman said Friendship is delivering services in six sectors-health, education, disaster management, good governance project, sustainable economic development and cultural preservation.
Senior Manager Abu Muhammand Shihab made a PowerPoint presentation on the activities of good governance project and said the project is running here aimed at giving the poor and marginalised people in the char areas a voice to claim their constitutional rights.
The Friendship officials gave answers to the questions relating to the works of char people, which were raised by the journalists and then, various recommendations were also adopted during the open discussion session of the meeting.
District Coordinator Abdus Salam, in his speech, thanked the journalists for attending the meeting and sought their whole-hearted cooperation to make the ongoing development programmes of the organisation for the char dwellers fruitful.
Senior Project Officer Mahbubur Rahman, Specialist of Materials Development Rifat Jinat Jahan, Project Coordinator Amdadul Haque, Assistant Project Manager Nazmul Hossain and other staff-members of the project were also present during the dialogue.
