Mohammad Rafique gets Gemcon Literary Award at Dhaka Lit Fest '17
Ashraf Jewel and Mamun Ur Rashid receive Kagoj Tarun Sahitya Puroskar
Poet Mohammad Rafique was honoured with the Gemcon Sahitya Puroshkar (Literary Award) 2017 for his book "Duti Kabbyagrantha" on the first day of the Dhaka Literary Festival (DLF) on November 16. The award giving ceremony was held at the Abdul Karim Sahitya Bisharad Auditorium of Bangla Academy in the city.
Ashraf Jewel and Mamun Ur Rashid were also jointly announced as the winners of the Tarun Literary Award, while Nusrat Nusin won the Tarun Poetry Award.
Mohammad Rafique was born in 1943 in the village of Baitpur, Bagerhat. During his student life at Dhaka University he was a political activist and was arrested and jailed twice. Pakistani martial law court sentenced him ten years of hard labour. He later was released earlier to complete his university studies. During the War of Independence of Bangladesh Mohammad Rafiq served as a Sector-1 commander and motivated the freedom fighters. Later he worked with the famous Radio station of Independent Bengal.
Mohammad Rafiq worked as a teacher at Chittagong Government College and at Dhaka College. After working in the Department of English, Jahangirnagar University for three decades, Mohammad Rafiq retired in 2009. He received Alaol Literary Award, Bangla Academy Award, Ekushey Padak and more.
During the ceremony, Gemcon Group Director Kazi Nabil Ahmed presented the awardees with the prize money and the jury board members handed over the crests to each winner along with a garland and a uttorio.
The jury board consisted of poets Asad Mannan, Khaled Hossain, Kumar Chakraborty, Bibash Rai Chowdhury and Shebonti Ghosh.
Rafique received Tk800,000 as the winner of the Gemcon Sahitya Puroshkar, while the Tarun Literary Award winners received Tk50,000 each, and Nusrat received Tk100,000. In addition to the prizes, the winning manuscripts will be published by Kagoj Prokashon.
