Sherpur, May 27: Doctors of all private clinics and chambers in the district went on an indefinite strike on Friday morning demanding the release of one of their fellows who was arrested in a case filed for wrong treatment of a woman that led to the amputation of one of her breasts.
Earlier on May 20, Dr Shariful Islam was arrested from Munni Diagnostic Centre of Narayanpur area of the district town in connection with the case lodged with the district's Amali Adalat by victim's husband Solaiman Miah.
According to the complainant, Dr Shariful diagnosed a sore on one of the breasts of his wife as cancer and performed a surgery on November 15 last year to amputate the breast, though biopsies conducted at Anwara Medical Services and Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) found no evidence of cancer.
District unit of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) called the strike in all the private clinics and chambers of the district.
The BMA district unit took the decision at a meeting held at Sadar Hospital on Thursday, said its president Dr AKM Barek Tota. The BMA will enforce the strike in all public healthcare institutions in the district from Sunday if the arrested doctor is not released, he added.
Former president of district unit BMA Dr ATM Mamun Jose said the doctors took the decision as their arrested colleague was not granted bail even after promising to compensate the victim.     ?UNB
