The BNP has warned of dire consequences if its party chief is arrested in keeping with a court’s order.

A Dhaka court had said she should be arrested if the former premier skips hearing of graft case slated for June 2.

“I want to spell it clearly that the consequences of arresting the leader will not be good. The people of the country will not accept this easily,” senior BNP leader Mirza Abbas said during a party meeting on Thursday.

On May 19, the court of Dhaka’s Third Special Judge deferred hearing Khaleda’s statement in a graft case for the fifth time and scheduled it for June 2.

It had said then that an arrest warrant will be out for the three-time prime minister if she fails to appear.

“A huge conspiracy is afoot against the BNP now. Just like it was before 1/11 (the military-backed caretaker regime) or during then,” said Abbas, a BNP National Standing Committee member.

Advising party supporters to be aware, he said that he have been noticing that the media is running reports against the BNP over ‘secret meetings.’

“I believe that these are false. A certain quarter is preparing the ground to create a rift within the BNP,” added Abbas.
