?RTI Act ensures people?s right to know?

RANGPUR, May 18: Enactment of the Right to Information (RTI) Act-2009 is a big success of the government as the law has been ensuring the people's right to know necessary information for establishing accountability and good governance.
Information Commissioner Nepal Chandra Sarker said this at an orientation meeting jointly organised by the Information Commission and upazila administration at Jaldhaka upazila parishad auditorium in Nilphamari as chief guest on Sunday afternoon.
Deputy Commissioner of Nilphamari Zakir Hossain, Upazila Chairman Alhaj Syed Ali, Assistant Director of the Information Commission Salah Uddin, Jaldhaka pourashava Mayor Fahmid Foysal Comet Chowdhury, and Officer-in-Charge of Jaldhaka Thana Mafiz Uddin Sheikh addressed the meeting as special guests.
With Jaldhaka Upazila Nirbahi officer Hassan Habib in the chair, government and NGO officials, public representatives, heads of different educational institutions, civil society members, women activists, journalists and local elite participated in the meeting.
Moderated by Upazila Election Officer Sekendar Ali, the Information Commissioner discussed the RTI Act-2009 in details at the meeting and highlighted the commitment and different steps taken by the government for its proper implementation.
Citing the history of emergence of the RTI or similar Acts on the globe, he said if free flow of information was ensured, transparency and accountability would work, corruption would be reduced, and thus good governance would be established at all levels.
The government officials and public representatives showed their commitments in implementing the RTI Act-2009 and forwarded suggestions for further promoting the Act considering both demand and supply sides.     ?BSS
