Dhaka, Delhi to work together for maritime cooperation

Bangladesh and India will work together to explore Indian Ocean RIM to develop a sustainable "Blue Economy" for this region, the first meeting of the Joint Working Group of India and Bangladesh observed.
The first meeting of Joint Working Group (JWG) for operationalise the   Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Blue Economy and Maritime Cooperation in the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean Region discussed the issue over the last two-days here in Dhaka.
The Bangladesh delegation was led by Rear Admiral Md Khurshed Alam (retd), Secretary (Maritime Affairs Unit), Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while the Indian delegation was led by Sujata Mehta, Secretary (West), Ministry of External Affairs.
For exploration and proper management of the natural resources of Indian ocean, especially, fisheries and aquaculture, renewable ocean energy, seaports and shipping, seabed exploration and minerals, marine biotechnology, research and development, tourism, ocean knowledge clusters and SIDS and LDCs, both the Prime Minister of Bangladesh and India agreed to work together and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during the Indian Prime Minister's visit to Bangladesh in June 2015. Both sides discussed possible areas of cooperation under the MoU for further strengthening the bilateral relations.
The development of the Blue Economy holds immense promise for the Indian Ocean region. The Indian Ocean is the world's preeminent seaway for trade and commerce. It is also endowed with a wealth of natural resources, which are, as yet, largely untapped.
Discussions centred on cooperation in capacity building and training, sharing of information and joint research in several areas, including marine biotechnology, green tourism and hospitality, marine aquaculture, deep sea fishing, maritime pollution response, ocean disasters and services, for mutual benefit.
The development of the Blue Economy in the Indian Ocean region is expected to yield a number of benefits.
The two sides agreed to meet at regular intervals to monitor the progress of cooperation activities being undertaken under this MoU.
