Tangail: A tribunal here on Monday convicted a man and sentenced him to death for killing his second wife over dowry in 1998.

Tangail Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Sharif Uddin Ahmed pronounced the judgment sentencing Abul Hossain, 55, of Sinalia Uttarpara in Basail Upazila, to death.

According to the prosecution, Abul Hossain used to demand money as dowry from his second wife Khodeza’s father and beat her up over the
issue when she failed to bring money.

On July 15, 1998, Abul Hossain beat up Khodeza mercilessly as she failed to bring Tk 10,000 from her father’s house as per his demand, leaving her dead on the spot.

Shahidul Islam, uncle of Khodeza, filed a case against Abul Hossain and his first wife Zalani with Basail Police Station.

The court acquitted Zalani as allegations brought against her were not proved.
