We live in the time of selfies. First Lady Michelle Obama and even Pope Francis have taken selfies. One estimate says that one-third of the photos taken by those 18-24 years old are selfies. Overall, people take more than a million selfies each day, report The Guardian.
With all the selfies out there on social media, how can you make yours stand out? Here are some tips for taking your selfies to the next level.
Accentuate Your Best Features
Do you have gorgeous eyes? Stunning lips? Amazing cheekbones? Highlight your best features by appropriately applying makeup. Mascara and eyeliner can make your eyes pop. Bronzer gives your skin a special glow.
A bold shade of lipstick makes a cool focal point for photographs, especially if there are a lot of neutral colors in the background. Of course, if you decide on making your mouth the signature star of your selfies, you should be diligent about taking care of your smile. Bi-annual visits to the dentist can really make you feel like your mouth is ready for its close-up.
Find a Flattering Angle
A selfie with the camera held directly in front of your face isn't always the best option. Try holding the camera above your head. This can give a glimpse of your outfit. Plus, it can show more of your surroundings, which is always nice when you're visiting someplace you really like.
Experiment with moving the camera from side to side, and keep "the rule of thirds" in mind. According to Improve Photography, "placing your face in the top-right or top-left corner of the frame can be far more compelling than if you placed your face right in the center. Generally, you want your eye line to be one-third down from the top of the frame, and off to one side of the frame a little bit."
Tilt your head at different angles. This can highlight your best features.
Get the Lighting Right
The wrong lighting can draw attention to your imperfections, or worse, can cause shadows to obscure your face altogether. If you're outside, keep in mind that sunrise and sunset make for the most flattering lighting. If it is daytime, find a position where the lighting does not cast awkward shadows or cause you to squint.
One trick you can use to improve lighting is to place a sheet of white paper under your chin. This will brighten up your face.
Have Fun!
By their very nature, selfies are kind of goofy. Don't take it too seriously. Experiment with different filters. Black and white makes for a cool retro effect. Maybe you know of a filter that makes you look like an alien from outer space.
Don't be afraid to make funny faces. Duck lips, a shocked face, or a tongue sticking out can make your friends laugh and add some variety to your social media output.
Taking selfies is fun, but there is an art to perfecting those self-snapshots. Take care of your smile and experiment with different lighting, angles, and filters, so you feel good about every selfie you take.
