3rd phase UP polls: Security measures beefed up in Comilla

COMILLA, Apr 21: The 3rd phase election to 20 unions under Comilla Sadar, Burichong and Laksam upazilas in the district kicks off on Saturday where tight security measures have been taken.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Shah Abid Hossain said, "156 polling centres out of 190 are vulnerable in three upazilas."
"Special measures have already been taken to beef up security at these centres during the polls," he added.
Four police and 17 Ansar personnel will remain on duty at each of the vulnerable centres while a team of three policemen and 14 Ansar personnel will be deployed at each of the other polling centres.
A team of 30 Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel, a mobile team, a striking force, one executive magistrate and one judicial magistrate would also be on duty in every union during the polls.
A striking force led by two executive magistrates will be on duty to avert any untoward incident at the vulnerable centres.
In Sadar upazila- Kalirbazar, Durgapur North and South, Amratali, Panchthubi and Jagannathpur unions are under polls. A total of 20 candidates are vying for the chairman post, 211 for the general member posts, and 50 for the reserved posts for women candidates in the six unions while one lakh 89 thousand and 97 voters will exercise their votes in 86 voting centres.
In Burichong upaizla- Rajapur, Bakshimul, Burichong Sadar, Sholonal, Peerjatrapur, Moinamoti, Mokam, Bharella North, and Bharella South are under polls. A total of 24 candidates are vying for the chairman post, 210 for the general member posts and 50 for the reserved posts for women candidates in the nine unions while one lakh 75 thousand and 323 voters will exercise their votes in 83 voting centres.
In Laksam upazila- Kandirpar, Gobindapur, Uttarda, Asgora and Laksam East union are going to polls. A total of 14 candidates are vying for the chairman post, 105 for the general member posts and 25 for the reserved posts for women candidates in the five unions while 93 thousand and 803 voters will exercise their votes in 51 voting centres.
