Hoping for the ‘return of democracy’ in the new year, BNP chief Khaleda Zia has urged all to unite setting aside their difference to take the nation forward.

The BNP chairperson was speaking at a programme to mark the Bangla New Year at the party’s headquarters at Naya Paltan in Dhaka.

“We are hopeful of getting back our democratic rights in the new year. There will be progress and peace. People will get reprieve from killings, forced disappearances, suppression. Everyone’s demands will be fulfilled,” Khaleda said.

“Let’s take an oath to take the nation forward through unity, setting aside differences,” she said.

Jatiyatabadi Samajik Sangskritik Sangstha (JaSaS) organised the programme to welcome the Bangla New Year 1423.

The programme commenced with the singing of the national anthem followed by Rabindranath Tagore’s ‘Eso He Baishakh’.

Khaleda’s security officials had a tough time to take her motorcade near the dais erected in front of the party office as thousands of BNP leaders and activists flooded the streets in the area.
The BNP chief, donning a cream-coloured saree with red borders, greeted her supporters on the occasion after getting out of her car around 4:15pm.

Singers Baby Naznin, Hasan Chowdhury, Piyal Hasan, Monir Khan, Poly Sharmin, Shuvro Asad, Shahjadi Kohinur Panprhi, ‘Moon’, ‘Rekha’, performed at the programme among others.

JaSaS singers sang folk songs, patriotic songs and songs on Liberation War.

In her short speech, Khaleda wished the leaders and activists of her party, the people, expatriate Bangladeshis and Bangla-speaking people around the world a very happy New Year.

In her call for unity, she said, “We have experienced many suffering, pains as well as happiness. Let’s forget the sorrows and pains and together march forward towards development and peace.”

“We will certainly succeed,” she added.

The BNP chief thanked the JaSaS leaders for organising the programme.

Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also spoke at the programme.
