80 hurt, 6 buildings tilt as earthquake jolts country

At least 80 people received injuries while getting down from a factory and a total of five buildings in the port city were tilted by the strong earthquake jolted the country on Wednesday night.
 
In Chittagong, five establishments tilted in New Market, Love Lane, Sagorika and Chandgaon areas.

Officer-in-chare of Chandgaon Police Station Shahjahak Kabir said a building in Chandgaon residential area leaned on the nearby building following the jerk.

Meanwhile, around 40 readymade garment (RMG) workers were injured while scrambling for getting down from the factory buildings in Chittagong EPZ area.

In Feni, a four-storey building tipped on another six-storey one at Sultanpur of Feni municipality area.

Deputy commissioner Aminul Ahsan, police super Rezaul Haque and officer-in-charge of Feni Model Police Station visited the spot.

The DC said they removed the residents of the tilted building for safety.

In Bandarban, the official residence of the upazila nirbahi officer of Naikkhonchhari developed cracks following the earthquake.

UNO Abu Safayat M Shahedul Islam said a large crack developed on a wall of his residence while parts of the roof collapsed.

Besides, over 40 people were injured in other parts of the country, including Sylhet and Sunamganj.

Earlier a magnitude-6.9 earthquake struck the capital and other parts of the country on Wednesday night.
 
The earthquake has rattled the country at 7.55 pm, prompting thousands of panic-stricken people to rush out into the streets from their homes and offices.
 
The US Geological Survey (USGS) has said, the quake which struck northwest Myanmar was 6.9 in magnitude.
 
The epicentre of the earthquake was 74 kilometres southeast of Mawlaik in Myanmar, the USGS confirmed.
 
But according to the Met Office in Dhaka, the epicentre in Myanmar was measured 7.2 in the Richter scale.
 
Earthquake caused strong tremors in northeastern India in West Bengal, Bihar, Assam, Orissa and Jharkhand, according to Times of India.
 
Strong tremors were also felt in Guwahati and Kolkata, where buildings were evacuated. People from Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Dumka and other parts of the Jharkhand also felt the tremors.
 
Tremors were felt in northern India in Delhi and in the NCR region and in Bhubaneswar, Orissa.
 
The tremors of the quake were also felt in Nepal and Bhutan, kathmandupost has reported.
