Pump owners here on Tuesday urged the government to reduce the price of CNG (compressed natural gas) if the liquid fuel price is lowered.
Or else, they said, the decreased rate of liquid petroleum will discourage people to use the environment-friendly natural gas.
"The government's move will finally lead to an anarchy in the transport sector and bring down our business pushing the Tk 6,000-crore investment in the CNG sector towards a disaster," said Farhan Noor, general secretary of Bangladesh CNG Filling Station and Conversion Workshop Owners Association.
He was addressing a press conference at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU).
The CNG stations owners held the press conference against the backdrop of the government's move to lower the price of liquid petroleum and raise the CNG price.
Association president Masud Khan, who read out a written statement on the occasion, said: "We humbly appeal to the government, especially Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, to consider our demand for the sake of the sector which was launched during her previous government's tenure in 2002." Other leaders of the association, including its Vice Presidents Manoranjan Bhakta and Nazrul Islam, were present on the occasion.
Association general secretary Farhan Noor said a total of 590 CNG stations have been set up following the government's decision to reduce air pollution in Dhaka city through the use of natural gas in motor vehicles.    ?UNB
