In an apparent bid to end ‘rivalry’ with his party senior colleague Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir made a surprise visit to his office on Wednesday.
As Fakhrul stepped into his office at a building near BNP’s Nayapaltan central office around 2pm, Gayeshwar warmly received him.
Fakhrul stayed there for nearly two hours and had lunch together which came from Gayeshwar’s home.
BNP joint secretary general M Shahjahan, party executive committee member and assistant law affairs secretary advocate Netai Roy Chowdhury were present.
According to media reports and party insiders, Fakhrul and Gayeshwar have not been in good terms for long over party leadership.
Party insiders said when Fakhrul was set to become the full-fledged secretary general, Gayeshwar, a BNP standing committee member, had reportedly tried to convince the party chief to appoint a more senior leader like Tariqul Islam and Khandaker Mosharraf to the post.
However, Khaleda has recently made Fakhrul, who worked as the party acting secretary general since 2011 following the death of Khandaker Delwar Hossain on March 16, the party secretary general.
Asked about the meeting, Gayeshwar said he could not meet Fakhrul after he had been made party secretary general as he was sick. “He (Fakhrul) came down to my office, and I greeted him for being the party secretary general.”
Earlier, Fakhrul met BNP standing committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Moudud Ahmed, MK Anwar and Tariqul Islam after being elevated to secretary general from acting secretary general.
