Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Sunday said the construction work on Dhaka metro rail project will begin towards the end of April next.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the work, he said while speaking in an agreement signing ceremony at a city hotel.
Many students think the Dhaka metro rail project will cause sound pollution on the Dhaka University campus, Quader said adding that the metro rail route was finalised after long negotiations with the university authorities.
He said ultramodern technologies will be set up on the university campus in addition to installing sound barriers on walls to prevent sound pollution.
Earlier, managing director of Dhaka Mass Transit Limited Mofazzal Hossain and authorised representative of Tokyo Construction Limited Hiroshi Asakami signed an agreement to construct a metro rail depot under contract package-1 of the metro rail project.
Under the agreement, Tokyo Construction Limited will set up the metro rail depot in Uttara phase-3 area spending Tk 567 crore. As per the deal, it will complete the depot construction work within 25 months.
Member of parliamentary standing committee on Road Transport and Bridges Ministry Nazmul Haque Pradan, Road Transport and Bridges secretary MAN Siddique, Japanese Ambassador in Dhaka Masato Watanabe and JICA chief representative Mikio Hataeda were, among others, present on the occasion.
The proposed Tk 22,000 crore ($2.5 billion) metro rail project is aimed at easing traffic congestion in the capital with an improved and faster pubic transportation service from Uttara to Motijheel.
