Meherpur: At least four people were killed while 15 others were severely injured in a road mishap on Thursday evening on Meherpur-Mujibnagar road near village Chalkshamnagar under sadar upazila of the district.

The identity of the deceased and injured could not be known immediately.

However, Joint Secretary of District Jubo League Shahidul Islam Peresan informed that they are the jubo league activists who came from village Bagwan under Mujibnagar upazila to observe the 97th birth anniversary of the father of nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

According to locals and police sources, the ill-fated victims came to district town from different villages to observe the birthday program of father of nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

The accident took place when they were going back home in a vehicle.

After reaching near village Chalkshamnagar on Meherpur-Mujibnagar road, the vehicle, locally known as Nosimon, collided head on with a picnic bus leaving  a Jubo league activist dead on the spot.
More than fifteen injured people were taken to Meherpur General Hospital where the duty doctor declared more three dead. All of them are Jubo league activists.

The agitated people of the area torched the bus. Passengers managed to escape the spot. Members of fire service and civil defense rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control.

Mustafizur Rahman, Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police said that possibly  the bus came from   Pubna to Mujibnagar to enjoy picnic.

Passengers and bus driver escaped and the situation brought under control.
