KUSHTIA, Feb 22: Pea farming has brought substantial profit to the growers here since its cultivation is becoming popular gradually among the
farmers.
Initially only three farmers have cultivated pea on five acres of land in the char areas of Khoksa upazila of the district, said Deputy Director (DD) of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) in Kushtia Hasibur Rahaman.
Though pea is a new variety of vegetable among the growers here, its demand is increasing day by day.
The marginal farmers became interested to cultivate pea since they could not be successful in the cultivation of other crops and vegetables.
The pea seeds were distributed free of cost among few farmers of Maligram village under Kumarkali upazila of the district last year and they got bumper yield. Besides, the weather here was favourable for pea cultivation.
The yield of pea is available within 60 days only and its production cost is also low.
Pea farmer Rahim Ali said, he cultivated pea on one acre of land spending Tk 15,000 and earned Tk 70,000 as net profit.
The DAE officials here hoped that the cultivation of pea would increase in the next years and the farmers would achieve success in this connection.
