Withdrawal of cases against Star Editor demanded

Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Muktijoddha Dal on Wednesday demanded that all the cases filed against The Daily Star Editor and freedom fighter Mahfuz Anam be withdrawn.
In a statement, it also demanded the government release Amar Desh Acting editor Mahmudur Rahman and journalist Shawkat Mahmud.
Muktijoddha Dal, a platform of pro-BNP freedom fighters, described Anam as a valiant freedom fighter and said, "The current government which is isolated from people has been making a hatred efforts to suppress different opinions by filing cases one after another against Mahfuz Anam."
Fifty-five cases, including 12 of sedition and 43 of defamation, were filed against Mahfuz Anam as of Tuesday for publishing reports based on information fed by intelligence agencies against Sheikh Hasina during the 2007-2008 tenure of the last caretaker government.
Leaders of the ruling party and its associate bodies, have started filing cases against the leading English daily editor after he in a television talk-show admitted to running stories in his newspaper based on information provided by DGFI without any scrutiny in 2007.    ?UNB
