South Africa and New Zealand Under-19 Teams won their play-off quarter-final match against their counterpart on Thursday, though the two teams put aside the disappointment of not qualifying for the Super League of the ICC U-19 World Cup.
South Africa vs Ireland
At the Sheikh Kamal International Cricket Stadium, after winning the toss Ireland chose to bat first and managed to score only 185 runs for seven. Lorcan Tucker scored unbeaten 77 runs hitting seven fours and one six. Willem Ludick and Dayyaan Giliem claimed two wickets each.
In reply, in the first wicket partnership, South African Liam Smith and Verreynne scored 104 in 159 balls. Wiaan Mulder contributed 43 runs to help South Africa to reach the target with four overs unused.
"I think we did well to restrict Ireland to 185 considering it had won the toss and chosen to bat," said South African captain Tony de Zorzi.
"The Irish bowlers tied our batsmen down in the first 10 overs but then Kyle and Liam opened up to put on a century stand and make it easy for us to chase the score. We want to represent our country with some pride, so are very keen to do well in our remaining matches," he added.
New Zealand vs Scotland
New Zealand U-19 team grabbed a seven-wicket victory over Scotland U-19 team at the Sheikh Kamal International Cricket Stadium Academy ground in Cox's Bazar.
Glenn Phillips smashed 89 runs off 40 balls with 11 fours and six sixes.
Christian Leopard, Josh Finnie and Finn Allen contributed to seal the match chasing of 181 runs. Haris Aslam grabbed two of the three wickets.
Skipper Josh Finnie, who remained unbeaten on 30 as New Zealand won in 27 overs, said it was a good start for his team in the Plate championship.
"It's nice to get off to a good start. We bowled pretty well and picked up wickets at the right time. Then Glenn smashed a quick-fire 89 chasing a small target, which was a good way to go about it. Hopefully, we will continue the same way and get through to the final," Josh Finnie said.
Earlier, Scotland chose to bat and scored 181 runs for nine. Owais Shah top-scored with 32 off 66 balls.
Scotland captain Neil Flack conceded New Zealand played better and deserved the win, but his team too could take some positives from the game.
"We showed we can bat 50 overs against a good side," he said. "We need to keep developing and make sure we finish the tournament on a high."
