The Supreme Court on Sunday upheld a High Court order that stayed for three months the eviction drive at a slum at Kalyanpur in the city.
Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division Hasan Foez Siddique came up with the order after primarily hearing a petition filed by the state against the High Court order, and fixed January 31 for hearing at the regular bench of the Appellate Division.
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam and deputy attorney general Ikramul Haque Tutul stood for the state while Barrister M Amirul Islam and Barrister Sara Hossain argued on behalf of the slum dwellers.
Earlier on Thursday, the High Court stayed for three months the eviction drive at the slum which faced protests from slum dwellers.
The court ordered the authorities concerned not to evict or harass the slum dwellers ‘without following proper legal procedure’.
Following this, the government filed an appeal with the Supreme Court against the HC order.
