The central bank has directed all scheduled financial institutions to assist the 'Ten Taka' (Tk10) account holders by relaxing rules on lending and recovery of money.
The Tk10 account holders of landless farmers, micro businessmen, natural disaster- affected people and some others are getting the government's refinancing loans at easy terms and conditions.
The central bank's directive asked the scheduled banks to design easy and flexible instalments against recovery from the borrowers who opened their bank accounts only with Tk10. It said banks can design instalments as per their own jurisdictions to support the terminal level farmers, micro businessmen and disaster- affected people to help terminal level farmers and landless people so that they may get adequate time in proper utilization of the refinancing loans to suit their purposes. According to the Bangladesh Bank's (BB) Financial Inclusion Department's directive, records in Credit Information Bureau (CIB) of a single party borrowing of up to Tk 50,000 would not be necessary. It said from now on the single recipient of Tk 50,000 is excluded from recording in the BB's CIB report.
Several years back the BB governor in a move helped the root level and terminal farmers, landless people and other disaster victims to open bank account only at Tk 10.
The account opener started getting loan supports from the BB's refinancing schemes but there were some mismatch and irregularities initially but the central bank's time to time monitoring helped improve the Tk10 account holders' activities in their respective fields. Currently the central bank is running a Tk2.0 billion refinancing loan scheme among the Tk10 account holders.
