A writ petition has been filed in the High Court asking for a rule to force teachers of public universities back to their classroom within 24 hours.
It also seeks a ban on their ongoing 'cease work' agitation over alleged discrepancies in the Eighth National Pay Scale.
Lawyer Yunus Ali Akhand filed the writ petition in the High Court on Sunday.
He said the matter may come up for hearing on Monday.
The finance secretary, cabinet secretary, education secretary, chairperson of University Grants Commission , Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor and president and secretary of the Federation of Bangladesh University Teachers Association (FBUTA) have been made respondent in the writ.
University teachers started their movement about nine months ago when the draft of the new pay scale was proposed.
They argued that it had lowered their status and that the time-scale and selection grade had been abolished with the intention to do so.
The Cabinet approved the pay scale in September last year.
Amid waves of protests, the government had formed a committee, headed by Finance Minister AMA Muhith, to look into the demands of the teachers.
After discussing with the teachers, Muhith had promised to fulfil three of their demands.
But the teachers allege that the pay scale's gazette, which was published on Dec 15, did not reflect his pledges in any way.
With no end to the deadlock in sight, the FBUTA went on an indefinite strike from Jan 11.
Teachers say that Muhith had promised to reinstate the time-scale and the selection grade, uplifting a portion of selection grade professors to the 'special grade' created for senior secretaries and also uplifting starting salaries for teachers from the eighth grade.    ?bdnews24.com
