The authorities have given the owners of a tilted building at Mohammadpur in Dhaka seven days to demolish it.

Rajdhani Unnyan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) gave the order on Monday.

It declared the four-storied building No. 19/4 at Tajmahal Road to be 'risky' after it tilted and leaned against an adjacent building on Saturday.

The residents were evacuated later that day.

Several buildings in the capital tilted and developed cracks due to tremors caused by 6.7-strong earthquake that hit the Indian state of Manipur a week ago.

RAJUK Director Waliur Rahman told bdnews24.com the residents had been asked to remove their belongings with the help of police and the fire brigade.

A top RAJUK official said the capital’s development authority would demolish the building and charge its owner if he or she failed to meet the deadline.

Fire Brigade and Civil Defence Director General Ali Ahmed Khan said they were ready to take the necessary steps.

Mohammadpur Police Station OC Jamal Uddin Mir told bdnews24.com in the evening that they were yet to receive any official order from RAJUK.

“We’ll move once we get the letter,” he said.

The building residents, too, had not received a copy of the order and were yet to start evacuation.

Khalilur Rahman, who ran a school uniform manufacturing factory on the ground floor, said a ‘huge’ number of uniform sets lay in the building.

University student ‘Farid’ said his admission papers were stuck in the building. “I will not be able to get admission without the papers,” he said.
