‘Jaba’, 10, hailing from Bogra, works at the house of a Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) official at Dhaka’s Siddheswari.
Police said she tried to commit suicide by setting herself on fire on Friday. But they did not disclose the reasons for her suicide attempt.
The SCB official, ‘Kallol’, and several others brought her to DMCH at around 11:30am on Friday in critical condition, said DMCH police outpost Inspector Mozammel Haque.
Quoting Kallol, Ramna Police Station Sub Inspector Shariful Hasan said, “Jaba started working at that house three years ago. But after knowing that she is mentally illness, Kallol returned Jaba to her village home.”
On request of her relatives, Kallol let her work at his house again as of six months ago, Hasan added.
The police officer said the banker did not provide them with contact details of Jaba’s family.
He said the child’s family had been informed of the incident and they were on their way from Bogra.
Quoting doctors, Hasan said 95 percent of the child’s body surface area is burned.
“The girl was murmuring for water while she was taken to the burn unit. She herself said she had attempted suicide by setting her body on fire,” the police officer added.
Police are looking into the matter.
