Robber gang leader lynched in Meherpur

MEHERPUR, Dec 21: A robber gang leader was killed in a mass beating at Ashrafpur village under Sadar upazila here early Monday. At least two villagers were also injured by the robbers at that time.
The deceased robber was identified as Ezarul Islam, 41, of Bhabanandapur village under Meherpur Sadar upazila. He was an accused in 15 cases recorded with Sadar and Mujibnagar police stations.
Ahsan Habib, officer-in-charge (OC) of Meherpur Sadar Police Station, said, a robber gang comprising 14/15 members entered the house of a Saudi expatriate Montu Sheikh of Ashrafpur village at deep night and looted valuables at gun point.
Later, they were going back by exploding bombs but Montu's wife caught the robber leader Ezarul. As they raised hue and cry, villagers came forward and gave them a mass beating, leaving Ezarul injured.
On information, police went to the spot and took Ezarul to Meherpur General Hospital where on duty doctor declared him dead.
Police also recovered one shooter gun and a Chinese axe from the spot.
