Awami League will expel for life its rebel candidates of municipal polls who did not withdraw their nominations by the prescribed deadline, party leader Mahbub-Ul Alam Hanif has said.
The Awami League joint general secretary made the observation on Friday evening after the 24-hour deadline to withdraw nominations had ended on Thursday.
Hanif announced the deadline after Awami League central leaders met with party chief Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Ganabhaban on Wednesday.
Several media have reported that nominations of more than 50 rebel mayoral candidates of the Awami League for the polls to 234 municipalities were retained after scrutiny by the Election Commission.
The party’s Organising Secretary Ahmad Hossain said in a media conference on Thursday afternoon that more than half of the rebel candidates had withdrawn their nominations.
On Friday evening, Hanif told bdnews24.com that 60 percent of the rebel candidates had withdrawn their nominations.
“Those who have not withdrawn yet will be expelled from the party for life,” he said.
He said the party would send them show-cause notices after Dec 13 and then give them a letter of termination.
The last day to withdraw nominations is Dec 13.
