The eviction drive in city’s Tejgaon truck stand on Sunday was postponed in facing obstruction by the truckers following a clash with law enforcers.

Meanwhile, Dhaka North Mayor Annisul Huq, confined in the office of Bangladesh Truck and Covered van Drivers’ Union for hours during the clash, left the place under the police protection at about 5pm.

After coming out of the office, the city mayor assured the workers of a better terminal for parking their vehicles. Following his assurance, the situation became normal and the eviction drive was not carried on for the day.

Sources said the truck owners were given two months time to shift the illegal establishments in the area. Accordingly most of the establishments, but few, have been shifted .

Mayor Annisul Huq and the city corporation workers went to Tejgaon bus stand area at 1pm to evict the rest of the establishments. After the eviction of a number of establishments, truck workers opposed it, prompting a violent clash between the truck workers and the city corporation workers involved for the eviction.

Witnesses said truck drivers and workers became agitated when the pre-scheduled eviction drive, led by the DNCC Mayor, began at about 1pm.

As the mayor went to the union office to talk to the union leaders, they hemmed him in their office.

Another source said the truck workers and local people started pelting brick bats during the drive in presence of the Mayor and Railway Minister Mazibul Hoque. The minister, later, left the place.

The law enforcers then fired gunshots and lobbed tear gas shells to save the Mayor and the Minister.

A truck driver named Jasimuddin received bullet wounds and later admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, the sources added.

A car of private television Channel I was also damaged during the clash and its driver Azhar received injuries. Besides, photo journalist Tanvir Ahmed of bdnews24.com received head injuries.

Mayor Annisul Huq, however, said that owners of illegal structures in the city would not be spared as the Prime Minister herself given him (Annisul) direction to remove all illegal establishments.

The workers were demonstrating in the area burning tyres till filing of this report at about 4pm.

Additional police and RAB members have been deployed in the truck stand area.

ADC Wahiduzzaman of DMP (Tejgaon zone), said the Mayor is now in the truck union office under police protection. “He will be removed after returning the normalcy. We alongwith the worker leaders are trying to calm down the situation,” he added.
