The ruling Awami League has directed its central leaders to hold the pending district councils soon. The party also directed its organising secretaries and designated leaders to form full-fledged committees where councils have been held and submit it to the Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Decision was made at a meeting of the Awami League central committee secretaries at Sheikh Hasina's political office at Dhanmandi on Saturday with Awami League General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam in the chair, sources said.
All the organising secretaries had submitted reports except Chittagong divisional Organising Secretary Bir Bahadur, sources in meeting said. "The meeting was held to discuss organisational matter. It also discussed about the national council of the party and set a timeframe to hold district councils," an AL leader said on condition of anonymity. "AL General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam will attend all the councils," the leader added.
Syed Ashraful Islam also urged all the organising secretaries and designated leaders to complete all the districts committees and submit to the AL President Sheikh Hasina as early as possible.
Earlier at a meeting of AL Central Working Committee Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina urged organising secretaries and district wise designated leaders to reform the committees and include dedicated leaders in it, sources said and added that this meeting is a follow up of Sheikh Hasina's directives to submit full-fledged committees to her.
According to the Awami League insiders, a total of 14 among 73 districts have failed to hold councils. The districts are Mymensingh, Gaibandha, Faridpur, Madaripur, Rajbari, Jhenaidah, north and south of Comilla, Narayanganj, Gazipur, Kishoreganj, Chandpur, Bhola and Jhalkathi districts.
