The country on Saturday observed the Armed Forces Day marking the founding of the Army, the Navy and the Air Force during the War of Liberation in 1971. After independence of the country, this day is being observed as the Armed Forces Day every year.
On this day the three forces started their combined attack on the Pakistani occupation forces. The nation remembers the sacrifices of war heroes from three forces who sacrificed their lives for the independence Bangladesh.
President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid their glowing tributes to the heroes in the morning.
The President, who is also the Supreme Commander of Armed Forces, placed wreath at the altar of Shikha Anirban (eternal flame) at 8 am.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, also in-charge of the Ministry of Defence, paid rich tributes by placing a wreath to the martyred members of Bangladesh Armed Forces on the occasion.
After laying the wreaths, the President and Prime Minister stood in solemn silence for some time as a mark of respect to memories of the martyrs.
Later, the President and Prime Minister signed the visitor's book on the premises of Shikha Anirban.
Earlier on arrival of President and Prime Minister at Shikha Anirban, chiefs of the three services and the principal staff officer (PSO) of the Armed Forces Division received them.
At that time, a smartly drawn squad of the armed forces presented a guard of honour to the President and the Prime Minister. From the Shikha Anirban, the Prime Minister went to the armed forces division where chief of the three services made a courtesy call her.
Then the Prime Minister accorded a reception at the armed forces division to the family members of the Bir Shresthos and other gallantry award winning veterans of 1971. In the afternoon, the Prime Minister hosted a reception at "Sena Kunja" in Dhaka Cantonment.
