IGP Assures Of Departmental Action Against ASP
'Drunk' ASP, BCL man beat journos in city

A' drunken' police official and a Chhatra League leader assaulted two on-duty journalists of a private television channel in the city's Shahbagh early on Friday.
Senior Reporter Nur-e-Alam and Cameraperson Didar Hossain of the Asian TV were beaten up by probationer Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Dhaka District Mashiur Rahman and the Dhaka University Unit of BCL leader Atiqul Bashar at a police check post at about 12:30am.
After the incident, Chief News Editor of the TV Selim Khan lodged a General Diary (GD) against the alleged accused with the Shahbagh Police Station.
Eyewitness said the on-duty police personnel stopped two men riding on a motorbike  with a 'Press' sticker pasted in front of the motorcycle at Shahbagh Crossing police check post.
When the on-duty policemen and the motorcyclists were talking, the journalists went to take their photos from near.
At one stage, the drunken policeman and the BCL man attacked the media personnel and injured them, they said. 
When the on-duty police stepped forward to resist them, the accused tried to assault the police, they added.
Later, the attackers were taken to the police station where their identities could be known and shifted to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital for stomach wash.
Afterwards, the ASP was handed over to the Dhaka District police while the BCL leader was released.
The media personnel were collecting information and taking photos to make a special report on the security of the capital.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shahbagh Police Station Abu Bakar admitted that the attackers were drunk.
 "As the journalists were taking photos, they beat them up."
Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque on Friday assured of taking departmental action against the ASP.
He said that the Superintendent of Police of Dhaka District was asked to look into the matter.
