A Speedy Trial Tribunal (STT) in Dhaka on Thursday sentenced Oishee Rahman, the daughter of slain SB Inspector Mahfuzur Rahman and his wife Swapna Rahman, to hang until death for killing her parents.
Judge Syed Ahmed of the Speedy Trial Tribunal (STT) -3 handed down the verdict in presence of the three accused in the case--Oishee Rahman, her friends Mizanur Rahman Rony and Asaduzzaman Johny. The tribunal also fined Oishee Tk 20, 000, in default, to suffer one year more imprisonment.
Besides, the tribunal sentenced Mizanur Rahman Rony to two years' Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) and fined him Tk 5, 000, in default, to suffer one month more jail term for sheltering the criminal but Oishee's friend Asaduzzaman Johnny was acquitted from the charges.
The judge came to court at 12:15 pm and read out the major portion of the 36-page judgement copy at a jam-packed court room.
After the hearing her death sentence, Oishee broke down in tears.
Before the judgement the parent's killer, Oishee, and one of her friends Asaduzzaman Johny were produced before the court amid tight security.
While Mizanur Rahman Rony appeared before the tribunal as he was on bail.
The Judge said in his observation in the judgement, Oishee was an "adult" when she killed her parents, thus there is no scope to consider her as a minor.
Oishee did not murder her parents in a drunken state. The murder was pre-planned thoroughly and committed in cold blood and by support of someone else, the STT Judge Syed Ahmed opined.
On August 16 in 2013, police recovered the bodies of Special Branch (SB) Inspector Mahfuzur Rahman and his wife Swapna Rahman from their Chamelibagh residence in the capital.
A day after the incident, Oishee surrendered to the police confessing to her involvement in the killing. Police also arrested two of her friends-- Asaduzzaman and Mizanur and domestic help of their house Khadiza Akhter Sumi in connection with the murder.
Mahfuzur's brother Mohammad Mashiur Rahman Rubel filed a case with Paltan Police Station on August 17. During the investigation, on August 24 in 2013 Oishee gave a confessional statement before a magistrate that she killed her parents. Later she made a plea before the court for withdrawing the confessional statement.
Abu-Al- Khayer, Inspector of Detective Branch (DB) of Police, submitted two separate charge-sheets - one against slain couple's daughter Oishee Rahman and her two friends- Mizanur Rahman Rony and Asaduzzaman Johnny on March 9 in 2014 and the other against minor domestic help Khadiza Akter Sumi under Juvenile Act.
The court on May 6 in 2014 framed charges against Oishee, Johnny and Rony in connection with the killing of her parents.
The trial of the couple killing case started on July 8 in 2014, through recording deposition of the complainant and also Oishee's uncle Mohammad Mashiur Rahman Rubel.
A total of 39 witnesses, out of 57, were examined by the tribunal.
The Special Public Prosecutor of the Tribunal, Advocate Mahbubur Rahman in a reaction told the daily observer that he was satisfied with the judgement but will go to higher court for other two accused.
Oishee's lawyer Advocate Faruk Ahmed in his reaction said that he was frustrated with the judgement, he will challenge the verdict.
When contacted over phone Mohammad Mashiur Rahman Rubel, the complainant and also brother of the slain SB Inspector Mahfuzur Rahman, told this correspondent he was feeling sick.
Advocate Jashim Uddin and Advocate Md Shahbuddin defended the other two accused.
The trial against the child domestic help, Sumi, 11, now on bail, is pending with the First Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court of Dhaka, a juvenile court.
