At least three people, including main suspected for killing a mother and her 15 month-old daughter, were killed in separate "gunfights" with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and police in Jhenidah, Dhaka and Gazipur on Monday.
Our Jhenidah correspondent added that Kamal Hossain, 30, was killed in an alleged gunfight with RAB on Dhaka-Khulna highway in Kaliganj upazila on Monday. RAB-6 commanding officer Major Suruj Miah said a patrol team of the elite force challenged a gang of criminals who were riding on a motorcycle around 1:30am. Sensing the presence of the team, the criminals opened fire at the team forcing the team to fire back that triggered a gunfight. Later, police found bullet-hit Kamal while his two other accomplices managed to flee.
A pistol was also recovered from the spot, police said. Hossain allegedly burnt his mother-in-law and sister-in-law to death over dowry after pouring petrol on their house at Farashpur village in the upazila on October 19.
In Dhaka, Yunus Ali, officer-in-charge of Uttarkhan Police Station told the Daily Observer on Monday that a team of Kotwali police arrested Rajib, accused in several robbery cases, in Dakkhinkhan area on Sunday night,
Based on information given by the arrested man, the law enforcers conducted a drive in Uttarkhan area around 12:30am to arrest his associates. Sensing presence of police, the gang of criminals opened fire, triggering "gunfight" with the law enforcers that left Rajib injured. Rajib succumbed to his injuries at DMCH, the police official said.
Our Gazipur correspondent added : Miscreants opened fire when the RAB members were conducting a drive against a snatching incident in Kumarkhaba area, triggering a "gunfight" and leaving one Rafizul Islam critically injured. Islam, succumbed to his wounds at Gazipur General Hospital.
