A restaurant employee was gunned down by his employer at Swamibagh, Wari in the city early Tuesday.
Later, the employer, Ariful Islam Sohel, owner of Ghharoa Hotel, cooked up a drama story that the victim, Riad Hossain, 17, was killed by some muggers near Shapla Chattar at Motijheel.
But police of Wari Police Station dug out the truth behind the murder on the basis of the allegation of the deceased's elder brother, Ripon.
The incident took place in 73, Swamibagh. Riad hailed from Hatila at Haziganj in Chandpur.
Ripon, elder brother of Riad, said that a mobile phone set and Tk 1,500 in cash were stolen from the hotel at Motijheel some 20 days ago.
On that allegation, Sohel beat up his brother several times, he added.
"On Tuesday afternoon, Sohel tied my brother in the hotel and beat up him for the losing things."
"At around 12:00am, he took my brother on his car to Riad's mess at Shamibagh."
At one stage, he shot him to death in presence of other co-worker of his brother, he also said.
Abdul Khaleque, Sub-Inspector of the Wari Police Station, said that police detained Manager of the restaurant Shafiq for interrogation. A case was lodged with the police station in this connection.
Sohel, the accused, went into hiding following incident, the police said.
The police official said, "The hotel staff admitted with me that Sohel tied Riad with rope and fired bullets."
Earlier, two of Riad's colleagues who brought him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 1:15am described it as a mugging story.
Talking to police at the hospital, they said two persons riding a motorbike intercepted Riad and his two colleagues near Shapla Chattar when they were going to the restaurant owner's residence at Shantinagar with Tk 220,000 after closing the restaurant.
