Apart from bringing changes in the party leadership and running the organisational activities at a critical moment, Dr Zubaida Rahman, wife of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Senior Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman, is likely to be catapulted to the top position of the party, insiders said.
If it happens, it will be the first time for Khaleda Zia to have appointed someone as chairperson of the party. After Khaleda's direct involvement in politics, she was arrested four times but she did not appoint anyone to the top position. Even, the post remained vacant when she was in prison for one year in 2007.
BNP as a party has failed to flex its muscles in the political field, giving birth to unsuccessful movements one after another. Staying off the pitch after declaring movement is a hackneyed story now.
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia now fully relies on Tarique Rahman. But Tarique is unable to return home from London due to his medical treatment and a raft of cases filed against him.
Amid the huge frustrations, Zubaida Rahman is a glimmer of hope at the moment. There are rumblings that she is returning home very soon, the sources added.
Although Zubaida will be a good choice for the party's youngsters, the top notch of the party will be equally frustrated with such move.
It is highly speculated in the political circle that Khaleda Zia may not come home very soon to avoid various cases including the much-talked about Zia Orphans and Zia Charitable Corruption cases.
When attention of the party's Acting General Secretary Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was drawn, he brushed aside the suggestion saying it "nonsense."
Due to treatment and political reasons, Tarique has been living in London since September 2008. Even, Zubaida lost her job as a government doctor last month due to her long absence from office. Her mother-in-law Khaleda Zia is also facing some cases and there is an apprehension of her being punished very soon.
Against this backdrop, leaders and activists of the party now believe that Zubaida Rahman is going to help the party come out of its critical juncture.
Many opined that the participation of Khaleda Zia and her son Tarique Rahman in the next polls is uncertain for all the cases filed against them. In the circumstances, Zubaida may play a crucial role.
Zubaida has politics in her blood as the daughter of a political family. She is the daughter of former Navy Chief Mahbub Ali Khan. As a doctor, she has no disrepute. It is hoped her clean image will have positive impact on the BNP, many insiders observed.
She hails from Sylhet. People in the region have huge respect for her father and the family.
Taking such issues in consideration,  Zubaida has wide acceptance to the people of Sylhet. The grassroots of the BNP are keen to have her as an astute politician.
Zubaida managed her leave from workplace on September 12 in 2008, at the fag end of the caretaker government. She accompanied her husband to London together with their children. She took a number of courses in medical studies, and has an FCPS to her credit.
About her entry into politics, some senior BNP leaders said Zubaida Rahman was living in a political family. Her husband, mother-in-law and many relatives are politicians. So, it is no wonder if she joins politics.
