BAGERHAT, Oct 23: The government has already distributed Taka 61,23,33,555 as compensation among the affected people for land acquisition for the Rampal Power Plant aimed at generating 1,320-MW electricity.
The government acquired 1,834 acres of land for setting up a coal-fired power plant at Rampal to create employment in the southern region, especially in Khulna division.
Power Secretary Monowar Islam on Firday said the Rampal coal-based power plant would not affect the environment and biodiversity of the Sundarbans as it would be set up at a point 69 kms from the UNESCO heritage of the Sundarbans and 14 kms away from the border of the world's largest mangrove forests.
Taking part in a views exchange meeting, organized by Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company Limited at Rampal, he said, "The ultra-super critical technology would be used for the Rampal power plant and harmful substances along with smoke would not be mixed with the air."
Besides, a 275 metre high chimney would be used in the power plant, so that there is no scope to pollute air from the power plant, Islam added. ?BSS
