SYLHET, Oct 20: At least 50 people were injured in a clash between two groups of villagers at Haripur under Jaintapur upazila here last night.
Locals said a young man of Hemu Haudpara village went to Haripur Bazar to purchase shoe and locked in an altercation with the shop owner, a resident of Balipara village, over its price, triggering the clash around 9:00pm.
In a sequel to the incident, residents of the two villages fought a pitched battle at Haripur Bazar, leaving at least 50 injured. 10 of the injured were admitted to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital.
The agitated villagers also vandalised about 10 shops of the bazaar during the five-hour fight.
Vehicular movement on the Sylhet-Tamabil Highway was disrupted for five hours, creating a long tailback.
On information, police rushed to the spot and took the situation under control around 2:30am, said Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Jaintapur Model Police Station Shafiul Kabir.
Additional police were deployed to fend off further trouble, the OC added.
