The three-day 37th national council of Bangladesh Chhatra Union (BCU) began on Sunday at the Dhaka University’s (DU) campus for forming a new leadership.
The theme of this year's council is 'Resist Communalism, Imperialism and Commercialization of education'.
Eminent botanist Dwijen Sharma inaugurated the programme as chief guest at the foot of Aporajeyo Bangla of Dhaka University, hoisting the national and the organisation flags.
While inaugurating the occasion, Dwijen Sharma said that University Central Student Union polls including Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) should be held with a view to learning democratic practice and creating qualitative leadership.
“Without the election, student politics would never be effective and the demands of general students would not be met," he added.
He urged the students to uphold the spirit of liberation war for establishing a secular and discrimination-free society through education.
He also urged leaders and activists of Chhatra Union to continue their movement against commercialization and privatization of education to ensure a quality education.
A cultural programme was held at the premises of Raju Sculpture near Teacher Student Central of Dhaka University in the afternoon.
Central President of Chhatra Union Hasan Tarek was in the chair while it was conducted by Generl Secretary Laki Akhtrr.
Among others, BCL Central President Saifur Rahman Sohag and DU Chhatra union unit President Liton Nond and leaders and activists of the organization were present.
Next two-day conference will be held at the Teacher-Student Center (TSC) auditorium on September 14, 15.
The last Chhatra Union council was held on February 17-19, 2014 where Hasan Tarek and Laki Akhter were elected as president and general Secretary respectively.
